Regis College is the Jesuit graduate theological school in the University of Toronto (UofT), in Canada. It is a member institution of the Toronto School of Theology (TST). Through this it has ties with other seminaries in Toronto, especially the two other Roman Catholic schools of the federation: St. Augustine's Seminary and the University of St. Michael's College.

Jesuit Tradition

Regis College sits proudly and deeply in the traditions of Jesuit spirituality, scholarship and service. Situated in Toronto, one of the world's most multicultural cities, this Jesuit school is located in a highly diverse community. As a result, Regis sees its mission as promoting an integrated spirituality, a faith that does justice, and critical dialogue, all framed by the pursuit of academic excellence. As per all Jesuit institutions, the concepts of finding God in all things and always acting "Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam"--for the greater glory of God--underpins the whole enterprise of Regis College.

History

Regis College had its genesis as the Jesuit seminary in downtown Toronto in 1930. It then offered philosophy programmes to Jesuit scholastics preparing for priesthood. It was in 1943 that the programme of offerings was expanded to include theology. In 1954 the Jesuit seminary was formally named Collegium Christi Regis, The College of Christ the King; then, in 1956 Regis College was accredited as a pontifical faculty (a status it retains) and thus became able to offer ecclesiastical degrees in theology.

In 1969 the Toronto School of Theology (TST) was created as an independent federation of 7 schools of theology, including the divinity faculties of Regis College. Within its own federation, U of T granted all but theology or divinity degrees. Since 1978, by virtue of a change made in its charter, the University of Toronto has granted theology degrees conjointly with Regis College and other TST's member institutions.
