"Sorry" is a pop–dance song written and produced by Madonna and Stuart Price for Madonna's tenth album "Confessions on a Dance Floor" (2005). It was released as the album's second single in early 2006.

ong information

It was released as the album's second single on February 17 2006 in the Netherlands, Italy, Brazil and Ireland, and on February 20 2006 in the United Kingdom and other European territories. In Germany it was released on February 24 2006. In the United States and Canada, the single was released on February 28, but in the U.S. "Sorry" was released to pop radio on February 7. In Australia it was released on the sixth of March.

"Sorry" was released to major radio stations for radio play worldwide in early to mid January, and it posted the highest debut on the U.S. Billboard dance airplay chart for the week of January 21. The single has also charted on multiple download and airplay charts in countries such as France, Greece, the Netherlands, Slovenia and the UK. In January, Madonna's official fanclub, Icon, confirmed that "Sorry" had been remixed by Pet Shop Boys, Man With Guitar (Stuart Price), Paul Oakenfold and Green Velvet. The Pet Shop Boys remix has added lyrics sung by band member Neil Tennant and was subsequently slotted in Disco Four.

"Sorry" was performed on her 2006 Confessions Tour.

Lumines Live

A version of "Sorry" for the game "Lumines Live" has been rated E10+ by the ESRB and was released on October 18th 2006 for the Xbox 360.

ingle cover

The single cover for "Sorry" marks the first time that a picture taken by a Madonna fan is being used as the cover image for one of her singles. Members of the Mad-Eyes Madonna fansite were contacted by Madonna's management in December 2005 after they saw pictures of Madonna's November show in London's G-A-Y nightclub, taken by Mad-Eyes photographer Marcin Kokowski. Designer Giovanni Bianco changed the colour of Madonna's hair to red, like he did for the album cover ["Sorry cover uses fan picture". Languages

A notable fact about the song is that Madonna says "I'm sorry" in different languages during the intro as well as the bridge of the song. These languages are :

; During intro:
* French : "Je suis desolée" ("I'm sorry")
* Spanish : "Lo siento" ("I'm sorry")
* Dutch : "Ik ben droevig" ("I am sad")
* Italian : "Sono spiacente" ("I'm sorry")
* Spanish : "Perdóname" ("Forgive me")

; During bridge:
* Japanese : "ごめんなさい/gomen nasai/" ("I'm sorry")
* Urdu : "Mujhe maaf karo" ("Please forgive me")
* Polish : "Przepraszam" ("Sorry")
* Hebrew : סליחה" /slicha/" ("Sorry")
* English : "Forgive me"

"Sono spiacente" is correct Italian, but quite formal and not used in every context. The Dutch translation is completely different in comparison to the other language translations. It is not known who or what made that translation mistake. In Dutch one would say "het spijt me" instead of "ik ben droevig" (which actually means "I am sad"). It could be that Babelfish translation was used, since that website also translates "I am sorry" to the Dutch "ik ben droevig". During her Confessions Tour, Madonna cut out the Dutch "ik ben droevig" of the intro of the song "Sorry" (as well as the Italian part).

Cover versions

Prior to Madonna's appearance at the Coachella music festival in 2006, fellow festival performers Swivel recorded an acoustic version of the song and released it via their My Space page.

Chart performance

"Sorry" reached number one in Greece, Italy, Spain, Norway, Romania and the United Kingdom. It reached the top ten in Australia, France, Germany, The Netherlands and Ireland. In the United States "Sorry" was a success on the "Billboard" dance charts, where it reached the top position on the Hot Dance Airplay chart and the Dance Club chart. It was Madonna's first single not to enter the Canadian Singles Chart and peaked at number fifty-three.

In the United Kingdom, it reached number one on February 26, 2006, becoming Madonna's twelfth number one single in the UK. The song topped the UK airplay chart for four weeks. The single had sold 178,963 copies in the UK to date and is Madonna's lowest selling UK number 1 single. Madonna broke another record with 'Sorry'. She became the first female songwriter to write 12 UK #1 singles. She surpassed former record-holder Mel C of Spice Girls fame.

"Sorry" has been a hit on radio stations, reaching the top ten on multiple airplay charts in Europe. The song has reached number one in Italy (while "Hung up" was still at n°3), Turkey, Greece, Finland, Poland, Spain, Romania, Ireland and the United Kingdom. It has gone top five in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Latvia, The Netherlands, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland.

The song has performed well on dance charts worldwide. In its fifth week on the Billboard Dance Radio Airplay chart in the U.S., the song reached number one. After debuting at number forty on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, the song entered the top ten in its third week. "Sorry" has reached number one on the Top 40 Dance Play chart in Finland, Germany's Media Control ODC Dance Top 40 chart, Ireland's Top 10 Dance Sales charts, Norway's Top 40 Dance Play chart, Sweden's Top 40 Dance Play chart and Yugoslavia's Top 40 Dance Chart. The song has also reached the top ten on dance charts in Denmark and the Czech Republic. The single's digital download performed well in Canada and several European countries such as the United Kingdom and France. In the U.S., the track has so-far peaked at number fifty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and has become Madonna's thirty-fifth number-one on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.

In Russia, "Sorry" reached #7 in the spring airplay chart and became the most airplayed song of spring 2006 in Moscow. The song spend 3 non consecutive weeks on the top spot in Romanian Top 100 and was ranked #11 on the year end chart.

While "Hung Up" proved to be popular in Canada, "Sorry" was unable to enter the singles chart, largely due to a lack of promotion. Although the song charted at number seven on the BDS Airplay chart, the CD single received a limited release because of the chart success "Hung Up" had experienced. "Sorry" climbed to a peak position of number fifty-three on the Canadian Singles Chart, but it became one of Madonna's few singles to not enter the top-fifty. It charted beneath the singles chart for eight weeks.

"Sorry" reached the top spot on the United World Chart, ending the fifteen week reign of "Hung Up" on the chart, bumping it to number two. Madonna is the first artist, since the creation of the chart, to have two singles sitting at the top two positions on the chart in one week.The United World Chart ranked "Sorry" as the 57th most successful single since 1999 with sales/airplay of around 5.18 million points. Music video

The music video was directed by Madonna's longtime choreographer Jamie King. Many of the performers featured in Madonna's "Hung Up" video are in that of "Sorry." King co-conceptualized her videos for "Human Nature" and "Don't Tell Me", and directed her Drowned World, Re-Invention and Confessions world tours. The video was shot on January 17-18, 2006 at Bagleys Film Studios in London, England and premiered worldwide on February 8, 2006. After four days on the MTV's "Total Request Live" countdown, the video reached number one on February 23, 2006. The video has also reached number one on MTV Italy's Top 10 and has been retired on MTV Poland's "TRL" after spending 50 days in the top 10.

The music video begins where "Hung Up" left off with Madonna and her dancers leaving the club. The video features four sequences; Madonna and her dancers in a disco-style van picking up all kinds of men, making them dance and eventually kicking them out of the van; a dance competition in a cage which features Madonna in a white leotard outfit; a roller rink where Madonna and her dancers perform a group dance which features some elements of the choreography used in "Hung Up"; during the 'spoken words,' and during parts of the chorus, Madonna is featured on her own, singing in front of a neon background.

An alternate version of the video exists, but with few differences, one of them most noticeably being Madonna giving 'the finger' to the camera. ["Directors cut of Sorry – too rude for TV?". The alternate video was first made available for viewing on production designer Marco Puig's website [http://www.marcopuig.com/ marcopuig.com] . A remix video was also put together as an interlude during the Confessions Tour. In it, images of Madonna against the disco background are interspersed with footage of prominent world leaders, as well as visions of poverty, deforestation, and war. Madonna's spoken vocals emphasize the words "lies" and "talk is cheap".
