Yelahanka is a suburb of Bangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka originally envisaged as a satellite town of Bangalore city, but now part of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike.

Geography

Yelahanka is located at coord|13.11|N|77.6|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/19/Yelahanka.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Yelahanka] ] . It has an average elevation of 887 metres (2910 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Yelahanka had a population of 93,263. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Yelahanka has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 68%. In Yelahanka, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Yelahanka is situated on the northern periphery of the city of Bangalore, India. It is primarily a residential area, but also houses the Rail Wheel Factory (formerly Wheel & Axle Plant), Astra Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, Gogo International, Federal-Mogul Goetze (India) Limited (formerly Escorts Mahle Goetze), Ranflex India Pvt. Ltd. and Hobel Flexibles Inc., a 100% Export Oriented Unit. Also houses many educational instititutions, like the Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology,Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute Of Technology,BMS Institute of technology, Seshadripuram College(more than 2000 students are there), Reva Engineering College, Ryan International School, Delhi Public School, Infant Jesus College of Nursing,SB college of nursing, Srishti School of Art Design and Technology and NMIT. There is also an Air Force Station here, which caters to many activities of the IAF. An Air Show is held every 2 years here as well, which is attended by thousands of people from all over the city, and outside as well.

Yelahanka is one of the Oldest town in Karnataka and is believed that it has a history of more than 500 yrs. It was ruled by a king called Kempegowda( under the provision of Krishnadevaraya)who built Bangalore City. Yelahanka is the place where you can find several temples some of them are built some 400 yrs ago.

Yelahanka has gained prominence in the recent past due to the new Bengaluru International Airport which has come up near Devanahalli town, just 20 km North of Yelahanka. Vehicular traffic to (and from) the new Airport needs to pass Yelahanka to enter Bangalore city.
