Canberra Comets

Canberra Comets

The Canberra Comets (also known as the ACT Comets) are a cricket team that were initially fielded in the limited over Mercantile Mutual Cup competition (today known as the Ford Ranger One Day Cup). They did not however field in the 4-day Sheffield Shield competition (today known as the Pura Cup). Their Mercantile Mutual Cup involvement existed from the 1997/98 season to the 1999/2000 season.

The Comets represent the small ACT, and found that there was insufficient local support available, let alone talent to be financially viable in the first-class and list-A competitions. Former Australian Test bowler Merv Hughes was brought out of retirement at 38 years of age to help Canberra, as was former Test batsman Mike Veletta. Current Australian international Brad Haddin also played for the Comets.

Today, the team represents Canberra in the lower-level Cricket Australia Cup. The comets finished the 2005/06 season in 4th place with two outright wins and losses.

The Comets are the premier team of the ACT Cricket Association who are affiliated with Cricket Australia. The ACT is considered a development region for the game of cricket in Australia.
