The Salvation Hunters is a 1925 silent film starring George K. Arthur and Georgia Hale. This was the first film directed by Josef von Sternberg, and it is sometimes described as the first American independent film, as it was shot on a small budget by a completely unknown director. Charlie Chaplin was impressed by this film, and worked with Von Sternberg at his Hollywood Studio.

The story concerns a number of people (all given only allegorical names: The Boy, The Girl, The Brute, etc.) living in Californian mud flats, having almost nothing to eat.
