Provincial Trunk Highway 4 (PTH 4) is a short provincial highway near Selkirk, Manitoba. The main purpose of this route is to connect Selkirk to PTH 59 and Grand Beach.

Route History

Originally, Highway 4 started its course in Selkirk, down what is now PTH 9. The highway entered Winnipeg as Main St, sharing the highway's course with Route 52. At Portage Ave the highway turned right, sharing the highway's course with Route 85. Highway 1 merged on to Portage Ave from Broadway and continued along the same course out of Winnipeg.

Eight miles west of the Winnipeg city limits, Highway 4 branched off to the right through St. Francois Xavier and Poplar Point on what is now PTH 26. It would then rejoin Highway 1 just east of Portage La Prairie. The two highways would once again share the road through Portage La Prairie to a point eight miles west of the city where Highway 4 would make another right turn on what is now PTH 16, the Yellowhead Highway. At the Saskatchewan border, Highway 4 became Highway 14.

The Yellowhead Highway section of Highway 4 was renumbered PTH 16 in 1977 to make all of the Yellowhead Highway numbered 16 across all provinces in Western Canada, and Highway 4 was erased from Portage Ave.

In the late-1980s, Highway 4 was extended to connect PTH 59 to serve the needs of those travelling to and from Grand Beach. In the mid-1990s, Highway 4 between Selkirk and Winnipeg was renumbered PTH 9, and an old section of Highway 9 was renumbered PTH 8 and PR 230. The only remaining portion is between PTH 9 and PTH 59, the section of the route that was extended in the late 1980s. The speed limit on the route is 90 km/h (55 mph).
