Oldest House in the USA

Oldest House in the USA

The title of oldest house in the United States of America built by a European [Needless to say, Acoma Pueblo, continuously inhabited since the twelfth century is notably older than either.] is claimed by the owners of a structure located at 215 East De Vargas Street on the eastern side of Old Santa Fe Trail in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was supposedly built around 1646. The house has been through the administration of numerous governments including the Spanish, Mexican, Territorial, statehood. Many ghost stories, including tales of ghostly apparitions, are associated with the structure.

Another edifice which claims to be the oldest house extant in the United States is the Gonzalez-Alvarez House on St. Francis Street in St. Augustine, Florida. It was supposedly built by the Spanish around 1564; if this claim is accurate, it is the older of the two buildings. However, a signboard outside the house says the house was built "soon after the English burned St. Augustine in 1702". The Henry Whitfield House, in Guildford, Connecticut, was built in 1639.

There are several houses listed on the Oldest buildings in America page that are older than 1646. For example, the Fairbanks House in Dedham, Massachusetts.
