Vénissieux ("Vènissiœx" in the "Lyonnais" dialect of Arpitan language) is a "commune" in the "département" of Rhône and the Rhône-Alpes region of France. It is the second-largest suburb of the city of Lyon, and is adjacent to its southeast side. It is therefore a component of the metropolitan Urban Community of Lyon and is connected to Lyon's Métro (underground or subway) system on the "ligne D" ("line D"). At the 1999 census it had a population of 56,061 inhabitants living on a land area of 15.33 km² (5.919 sq mi).
