Peerages of England and Ireland

The title "Baron Car(r)ington" has been created three times in the United Kingdom since the mid-17th Century. The first creation was in the Peerage of England and closely preceded the creation of the "Viscount Carrington" in the Peerage of Ireland. This title was created for a Sir Charles Smyth; the descendents of Sir Smyth retained the surname Smith while carrying the Carrington title. The second creation was for a Robert Smith, whose descendants took the surname "Carington" (one 'r') and carried the Carrington (two 'r's) title. The third creation was as a life peerage for Peter Carington (one 'r') and carried the title "Baron Carington" (one 'r').

Carrington most often appears as a surname, but has infrequently appears as a given name. One example is American actress Carrington Garland (b. 1964); another is British entomologist Carrington Bonsor Williams (1889–1991). These two examples suggest that 'Carrington' is a gender neutral given name.Fact|date=July 2008

Carrington may also appear as a middle name, such as in the cases of American politicians Edward Carrington Cabell (1816–1896) and Edward Carrington Venable (1853–1908), and American financial economist and academic John Carrington Cox (living).
