Sauder School of Business

The Sauder School of Business is a business school at the University of British Columbia located in the University Endowment Lands, just west of the city limits of Vancouver, Canada, which provides diploma, bachelor, masters and Ph.D. programs. There are currently 24 000 alumni in 60 countries.

Originally named the UBC Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration, it was renamed on June 5, 2003 to the Sauder School of Business, coinciding with the donation of a $20 million endowment by Dr. William Sauder. The $20 million endowment was, at the time, the largest single private donation ever made to name a Canadian business school.

History

1929 – In response to lobbying by the business community, represented by members of the Vancouver Board of Trade, the university offers its first Bachelor of Commerce degree, through the Faculty of Arts and Science. A Department of Commerce (1939) and a School of Commerce (1950) are formed later.

1950 – Community outreach and executive education partnerships are forged with the establishment of the Sales and Marketing Executive Program. Soon thereafter, partnerships were established with C.G.S, C.A., C.M.A, Banff School of Management, Real Estate Institute and the Real Estate Council of British Columbia. The School of Commerce is established.

1952 – Graduate business education begins at UBC, with the introduction of the Master of Commerce, later replaced by the MBA (1955). 1956 – The university establishes a Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration, with E.D. McPhee as the first Dean. While maintaining its official name for ceremonial purposes, the Faculty later re-brands itself as UBC Commerce.

1956 - The University "promotes" Commerce to Faculty Status.

1958 – The Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration reaches out internationally by helping to establish two key overseas business schools in Malaysia (1961), and Singapore (1962).

1962 – Construction begins on the Henry Angus Building, home of the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration.

1969 – The Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration launched a new PhD, accepting doctoral students for study in advanced business administration.

1992 – The David Lam Management Research Centre opens. Building construction was made possible through a gift from David See-Chai Lam, former Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, and his wife Dorothy. The building is home to the David Lam Management Research Library.

2001 – UBC Commerce opened its new downtown teaching facilities at UBC Robson Square.

June 5, 2003 – The Sauder School of Business is created.

November 2, 2006 - Naming of the Robert H. Lee Graduate School at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia.

November 24, 2006 - The construction of a CDN $65 million building extension and renovation to the Sauder School of Business gains approval from PhD, Masters, and Undergraduate students.
