- Philinus of Athens
Philinus ( _el. Φιλινος; lived during the
4th century BC ) was an Athenianorator , a contemporary ofDemosthenes and Lycurgus. He is mentioned by Demosthenes in his oration againstMeidias rf|1|dem, who calls him the son of Nicostratus, and says that he wastrierarch with him.Harpocration mentions three orations of Philinus. These are "Against the statues for Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides", which was against a proposition of Lycurgus that statues should be erected to those poets;rf|2|harp; "Against Dorotheus", which was ascribed likewise toHyperides rf|3|harp; "Judiciary litigation of the Croconidae against Coeronidas", which was ascribed by others to Lycurgus.rf|4|harp_ath_10 An ancient grammarian, quoted byClement of Alexandria rf|5|clem_6, says that Philinus borrowed from Demosthenes.Notes
