Zapateo

Zapateo

Zapateo (which literally means "shoe tapping") is a flamenco-derived 2/4 folkloric tap dance characterized by precise and alternate rhythmical patterns of feet movements and stampings on the floor. According to some authors, this dance style comes from the stamping of the ground movements made by a rooster during courtship. Mostly danced by the man, these resemblance movements of fancy 'hard shoe' footwork are performed in a specific manner and with aesthetic beat sense, entirely fusing them with the music; while women face their partners moving gently sideways imitating the uninterested actions of a chicken.

Zapateo exhibits the subtle and intricate footwork based on African rhythms and is considered by some to be the predecessor of the North American clogging and tap dancing.
