* "Join John Candy for a holiday hilarity!"Plot summary
The plot involves John Candy's character taking his family on a summer vacation in Florida, during which they are constantly beset by a never-ending barrage of problems. Candy's character receives a leg injury that prevents him from being able to spend time with his family, and his immobility, though temporary, is a major source for much of the film's comedy.
When Atlanta air-traffic controller Jack Chester and his family leave for what turns out to be a fairly decrepit shack on a public beach in Florida, he eventually locks horns with pompous local sailing champion Al Pellet, the owner of this dubious piece of real estate. Their conflict culminates in a boat race in which Jack and his motley crew are at first glance no match for the others in the race. In the meantime, there are plenty of skits with Jack dressed as an anything from an ample, unintentional likeness of a Geisha to the stereotypical tourist in a Hawaiian shirt. His long-suffering wife Sandy and their daughter Jennifer tackle their own problems, related to sexuality in one way or another.
