King Edward VI College is a top performing sixth form college located in Stourbridge, England, in the West Midlands area. Originally founded in 1552 as a grammar school, it became a higher education institution in 1979. Currently, it teaches subjects in preparation for AS- and A-level Examinations, for students generally aged sixteen to eighteen.

The College

The College is highly regarded due to continuously producing some of the best results in the West Midlands, in 2007 averaging 1037.1 A/AS Level points per student. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/education/07/school_tables/secondary_schools/html/332_8600.stm] , BBC league tables.]

In 2004, the college was awarded the Beacon status following an inspection by the Office for Standards in Education. [ [http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/reports/pdf/?inspectionNumber=263433&providerCategoryID=128&fileName=\\school\\130\\s3_130478_20061017.pdf] , The college's 2004 Ofsted report.]

The college's motto is the "Honi Soit qui Mal y Pense", the same motto as that of the Order of the Garter. Translated from Old French it means "shame upon him who thinks evil of it."

Its dramatic productions are well known in the area, the latest being Plague!

The college's Charter was granted by King Edward VI in 1552. However, a school of some sort had stood on the present site since the mid-15th century.

Charter Day is now celebrated with a compulsory church service for all first-year students every year in mid-June. The service is held at St. Mary's Church in nearby Oldswinford.

tudents

The College's students are generally from within the Dudley Borough, but can come from as far afield as Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Worcester. Background education of most students is usually from State Secondary Schools, though there are several Private institutions in the area - notably that of Elmfield - a Rudolf Steiner school. As such, some pupils attend the college between the ages of seventeen and nineteen, instead of the usual sixteen and eighteen.

The Site

The college buildings are all on one site, on Lower High Street in Stourbridge. The campus is bound by the Ring Road, Coventry Street, adjacent shops on Lower High Street and the street itself, and a new housing development. As such, extension is quite difficult. However - all lessons take place on college grounds except for Computing, ICT, Sociology and Economics, which are held in Medusa House - a small office block near to the grounds - and Drama, Theatre Studies and Dance, academic courses which take place in Westwood House, above the shops on Lower High Street. PE lessons also occasionally occur off site, since there are no pool or pitch facilities.

Trivia

The college has produced two national TV football commentators in the past few years, Rob Hawthorne of Sky Sports and Dan O'Hagan of BBC Match of the Day.
