Tom C. Clark High School is a high school in the Northside Independent School District of San Antonio, Texas, United States. Clark is currently rated by the Texas Education Agency as "Academically Acceptable".

Administration

Stan Laing is the principal since 2006, and vice principal is Michael Bruce. The administrators are Peter McMahon, Anna Draker, Melissa Grijalva, and the Academic Dean is Susan Cleveland.

Area served by Tom C. Clark High School

Clark serves a portion of the city of San Antonio and the city of Shavano Park. The current population is close to 4500 students. Due to overcrowding, NISD is opening a new high school, Louis D. Brandeis High School, in the fall of 2008.

Feeder patterns

Feeder elementary schools include: Blattman, Colonies North, Locke Hill, Howsman, Boone, Leon Springs, and Julia Newton Aue Elementary School.

Feeder middle schools include: Hobby, Rawlinson, and Rudder.

Namesake, school colors and mascot

As with all the high schools in the Northside Independent School District, it was named after a United States Supreme Court Justice, in this case Tom C. Clark.

The school colors are Black, Silver and White.The school mascot is the cougar. Sports teams are the Cougars, female sports teams are the Lady Cougars, and the spirit organizations are the Cougarettes.

Programs offered by Clark

Clark is currently classified as a 5A school, with a population of more than 4000 students.

Clark offers all the athletic programs sanctioned by the University Interscholastic League. These include Football, Boys and Girls Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, Track and Field, Swimming and Diving, Water Polo, Softball, Tennis, and Golf.

Clark also offers most, if not all of the Academic UIL events, including Academic Decathlon, Social Studies, Science, Current Issues, One Act Play, Computer Science, Computer Applications, Calculator Applications, Literary Criticism, CX Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debates, various speaking competitive events, various journalistic competitive events, and Air Force Junior ROTC.

Clark also offers many fine-arts programs including Orchestra, Marching Band/Colorguard, Symphonic Band, Choir, Theatre, and a strong Art program. As of the 2006-2007 school year, Clark is the only school in the district to offer courses in Japanese Language.

Academic Awards

Named one of the top schools in the country by Newsweek Magazine.

"Texas Monthly" names Clark one of the top schools in Texas.

Students have placed nationally at Science Fair, National French Exam, National Science Exam, and National Latin Exam.

Yearbook (The Witness) was named Honorable Mention by Taylor Publishing.

Newspaper (The Chronicle) was awarded the Silver Crown from the Columbian Scholastic Press Association (Columbia University, New York City).

Clark Art Students were honored with Congressional District Awards, and were State Finalists at VASE.

Clark Debate Students were invited to attend the National Tournament of Champions.

Clark Latin Students were State Champions 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 and National Champions 2005-2006.

Clark Forensics Students qualified to State.

Academic Decathlon received 5th place at regionals.

Economics classes placed 1st in Section 1 of the Fall 2006 Stock Market Game.

Model UN received Best School, Honorable Mention.

Athletic Awards

District Champions in Golf, Baseball, ROTC Orienteering, Swimming and Diving, Tennis (17 consecutive years), Water Polo, and Volleyball.

State qualifiers in JROTC, Water Polo, Swimming and Diving, Volleyball, Track and Field, Tennis (Elite 8), Winterguard Solo and Ensemble.

Girls Basketball members named to Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Academic All-State team for academics and athletics.

Cheerleaders are national champions 2006-2007 (All 12 members made All-American) and the AFJROTC drill team's have been accepted in the masters level at the national drill meet competition.

Clark Winterguard, the "Quintessence", has won 16 consecutive state championships.

Rivalries

One of Clark's biggest rivals is found in Winston Churchill H.S., in the North East Independent School District. The two schools have an annual football game known as "Gucci Bowl" due to the historical affluence of the area. The schools also face off annually in volleyball, usually late in the playoffs and other sports including swimming.

Clark's other rivals through the years came from its own district, including older rival John Marshall H.S. (which Clark was originally split from in 1978) and now Sandra Day O'Connor H.S. (also split from John Marshall H.S.) Since the opening of O'Connor in 1998, that rivalry between Clark and O'Connor has only intensified due to the close proximity of the two schools. The schools' annual game is known as "Blackout" for the Clark team, a tradition that started in 2004. The new Brandeis H.S. has the potential to displace O'Connor as Clark's newer and closer rival once it opens in the 2008-2009 school year. Many areas of the Clark and O'Connor attendance zones (along with a small portion of Marshall's zone) will be changed to the Brandeis attendance area which should create yet another close rival for those schools.The opening of Brandeis H.S. will also be the first time that Clark H.S. has had large portions of its attendance areas zoned away to another high school. The same can be said for O'Connor H.S. to the west of the new Brandeis H.S. Brandeis should be one of the biggest rivals for both high schools when it officially opens in 2008.
