John Samuel Sherburne

John Samuel Sherburne

John Samuel Sherburne (1757–August 2, 1830) was a lawyer, jurist, and politician from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1776 and from the law department of Harvard University. He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Portsmouth in 1776, and served in the Revolutionary Army, attaining the rank of brigade major of staff.

Sherburne represented the state in the United States House of Representatives from 1793 to 1797, and was appointed judge of the United States District Court for the district of New Hampshire, serving from May 1804 until his death in Portsmouth, 1830.

John served in the New Hampshire Militia during the Revolutionary War, rising to become brigade Major on the staff of General William Whipple. He left the service after he lost a leg in the engagement at Butts Hill in Rhode Island in August of 1778.

Sherburne served as United States Attorney in New Hampshire from 1801 until 1804 when he became the judge of the United States District Court for New Hampshire. He presided over that court until his death at Portsmouth in 1830.
