Juan Alberto "Pepe" Schiaffino Villano (born July 28, 1925 in Montevideo – died November 13, 2002) was an Uruguayan-Italian football (soccer) player. He played forward, in particular with C.A. Peñarol and A.C. Milan, and won the Football World Cup 1950 with the Uruguayan national team.

Clubs

Schiaffino started to play in the Italian Serie A in September 1954. He played 171 games with A.C. Milan and scored 60 goals, and participated in the 1958 European Cup Final, which Milan lost to Real Madrid 2-3 (aet).

National teams

Schiaffino played for two national teams; first with the Uruguyan national team from 1946 to 1954, and later with Italian national team from 1954 to 1958.

He had 21 caps with the Uruguyan national team (8 goals) and 4 caps with the with Italian national team.

Schiaffino participated actively in the victory of Uruguay during the World Cup 1950, scoring one goal during the final and beating Brazil in its own stadium, in what was called the "Maracanazo". He played also during the World Cup 1954 (fourth place).

World Cup 2006

It was reported on ESPN's "World Cup Live" premier show that Schiaffino would be attending the opening ceremony of World Cup 2006 to be held on Friday June 9. The organizing committee obviously mispoke as Schiaffino died four years prior.
