Bigby, Lincolnshire

Bigby, Lincolnshire

Bigby is a village and civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It lies south of Barnetby and northwest of Caistor, at gbmapping|TA0614107119. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 234, though this has certainly increased because of the new "Bigby Green" housing development. The village is close to the administrative border with North Lincolnshire and is about four miles east of Brigg. The hamlet of Somerby is situated nearby.

The name Bigby comes from an Old Norse personal name "Bekki" + Old Norse "býr", meaning "settlement" or "farmstead". [Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-508137-4] Bigby is recorded in the Domesday Book as "Bechebi".

The local Anglican parish church is dedicated to All Saints. It underwent restorations in 1780 and 1878.

Bigby is one of the Thankful Villages in Lincolnshire, because it lost no men in World War I. There is a war memorial in the parish churchyard, in remembrance of two local men who died during World War II.
