Battle of Ardnocher

Battle of Ardnocher

The Battle of Ardnocher (also known as Ardnorcher or Ardnurcher) was fought in Ireland in 1329 between the English and the MacGeoghegans of Cenel Fiachaigh or Kenaleagh, County Westmeath; the English force was defeated. [Annette Jocelyn Otway-Ruthven, "A History of Medieval Ireland", Routledge (1980), page 247.] The "Annales Hiberniae" records that on 10 August 1329, Thomas le Botiller (Butler) attacked the fort of Ardnorcher (now the village of Horseleap) and was defeated by William Gallda MacGeoghegan and killed along with several others including the loss of 140 soldiers. ["Annales Hiberniae", James Grace of Kilkenny (1537-39), [http://www.ucc.ie/celt/published/L100001/ Online version] ] The Annals of the Four Masters offers a different account, giving the date as 1328 and stating that 3,500 English were killed. ["Annals of the Four Masters", 1328 (M1328.26) [http://www.ucc.ie/celt/published/T100005C/index.html Online version] ]
