Publication history

Earth-31916: Supreme Power

This version of Hyperion is an alien sent to Earth as a baby, and is raised by a secret faction of American scientists in a secret compound. Raised by a pseudo-family, the boy discovers that he has superhuman powers and is manipulated into becoming a weapon for the U.S. government. Given the public codename of Hyperion, he eventually questions his role and origin, leading to his attempted murder by the government. Hyperion then travels the US, where he also encounters and aids Nighthawk and The Blur in the hunt for a super-powered serial killer. This partnership and Hyperion's estrangement from the US government eventually leads to the formation of the Squadron Supreme and the government reveal to the world that Hyperion is in fact an alien. An angry Hyperion then flies into the Arctic at hypersonic speed and causes massive shockwaves around the world. He then warns the governments of the world to stay out of his affairs. ["Supreme Power" (2006 - 2007)]

The US government then recruits four superhumans - Dr. Emil Burbank; Arcanna; Shape and Nuke to apprehend Hyperion, and after a brief battle Hyperion accidentally "time-jumps" two years into the future, and sees the possible consequences of his actions. ["Supreme Power:Hyperion" #1 - 5 (2005 - 2006)]

Hyperion and Nighthawk recently travelled to Darfur, Africa to prevent atrocities against the native people. Hyperion comes into conflict with Nighthawk when he discovers he is being used as a weapon to correct the geo-political climate of the region. ["Squadron Supreme: Hyperion vs. Nighthawk" #1 - 4 (2007)]

Powers and abilities

Hyperion possesses superhuman strength, stamina, speed and durability. He has matched such beings as Ultimate Thor in terms of strength and durability. [Ultimate Power] He also has greatly enhanced sensory perceptions, which extends to being able to perceive the entire electro-magnetic spectrum and "flash vision" - the equivalent of heat vision. It can attain sufficient temperatures to disintegrate organic matter. [ [http://en.marveldatabase.com/Hyperion_%28Earth-31916%29 Hyperion (Earth-31916) - Marvel Database ] ] He has been seen to initially outmatch Ultimate Thor in reflexes, but was later overpowered by him when Thor felled him with a huge bolt of lighting and savagely beat him with Mjolnir. [Ultimate Power]

His durability is sufficient that he could survive a simultaneous ground zero detonation of 20 'daisy cutter' bombs, each with an explosive yield of 1 kiloton, [ [http://www.marvel.com/universe/Hyperion_%28Earth-31916%29 Hyperion (Earth-31916) - Marvel Universe: The definitive online source for Marvel super hero bios ] ] though with severe internal injuries. He is also sufficiently durable and strong that he was able to impact the ground from orbital heights to create an earthquake registered at a 10.5 on the Richter Scale. [Supreme Power (2006-2007)]
