"Walk Away" is a song by American singer Kelly Clarkson on her second album, "Breakaway" (2004), and was the album's fifth and final single.

Description and background

Clarkson called "Walk Away" "one of the brighter songs" on "Breakaway", and said that "It's just one of those anthem songs where everybody is [bouncing their heads] in the car." She said of its subject matter, "the whole song is just about if it's not working out, then just leave, don't stay and make it worse."Moss, Corey. Initially, "Addicted" had been planned for release as the fifth single, but its release was cancelled when RCA deemed its dark tone and message too similar to that of Clarkson's previous two singles, "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and "Because of You".Fact|date=January 2008 "Gone" was picked as the replacement, but it was dropped because of similarities to another single from the album, "Since U Been Gone". After two months of airplay on U.S. pop radio stations, "Walk Away" was released as the fifth single from "Breakaway" in 2006. By that point, "Gone" had amassed considerable airplay on popular radio stations in major markets such as Atlanta, Boston, and New York City.

"Walk Away" made a tremendous impact in Thailand, and Thai pop band Endorphine adopted it into their song "Sak-Ka-Waa Bpaak Waan".

"Walk Away" bears a resemblance to early 80's rock songs like Tom Petty's Don't Do Me Like That.

Music video

The music video for "Walk Away" was shot from February 4 to February 5 in Los Angeles,Fact|date=January 2008 and Clarkson wrote the treatment for it. It was to be released on February 25 at the "TRL" Awards, but was pulled because director Joseph Kahn said it needed some "touching up".Fact|date=January 2008 The video premiered on British music channels on March 6, and on "TRL" and "MuchOnDemand" on March 7. Of the fifty days it was eligible for the "TRL" top ten video countdown, it was at number one nineteen times, including on its last day, June 1. [ [http://www.popfusion.net/records/recaparchive/2006_06.html TRL Archive, June 2006] , Popfusion.net.] The video was voted thirtieth in VH1's "Top 40 Videos of the Year" for 2006. In the video, alarm clocks wake up several different people. Clarkson is at a radio station singing "Walk Away" live, and various people—including a man showering, a woman at an office, twin brothers, a football player, and a man cleaning his house—are singing along. One man, played by Clarkon's brother Jason, is discovered singing the song in a public restroom. As soon as he is found, he runs out in embarrassment. In his place, the man who found him begins singing along. Another man sings along in a car, and he eventually gets out of the car to dance, holding up traffic. The video is intercut with shots of Clarkson performing the song with a band.
