historian ofRoman art and a specialist in the study of Roman historicalrelief sculpture. Koeppel studied at theUniversity of Cologne and studied under the ancient art historianHeinz Kähler . Gerhard Koeppel was a member of theArchaeological Institute of America , the Classical Society of theAmerican Academy in Rome , the Deutscher Archaeologenverband, and Corresponding Member of theDeutsches Archaeologisches Institut . He was Resident Scholar at theAmerican Academy in Rome (1974-1975), Professor-in-Charge of theIntercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (1980-1981, 1989-1990, spring 1998), and Director of the American Academy Summer School (1986-1988).He specializes in Roman Historical Reliefs of the Roman Empire and is publishing a catalogue of these sculptures in article format in the "Bonner Jahrbuecher" starting with vol. 183 (1983).
