Quinton James Cowan is a New Zealand rugby union footballer. He has been an All Black since 2004 where he made his debut during the 2004 tour to the United Kingdom and France. Cowan was born in Gore, New Zealand, and attended Gore High School. He plays for Woodlands in the Invercargill premier competition.

All Blacks

Jimmy Cowan made his All Black debut age 22, versus Italy in 2004 and has currently played 14 tests and 1 non-test (July 2008) against the Barbarians in December 2004. His latest test match was against South Africa at Rustenberg in September 2006. This was his first test match start, and he performed admirably with a probing running game, accurate passing and stout defence marking his performance. He was one of the 3 halfbacks being used by the All Blacks for the 2006 Tri Nations Series. He wasn't required for the 2006 end of year tour to Europe. He was not included in the 2007 world cup squad.

Junior All Blacks

On the 18 May 2007, Cowan missed out on selection for the All Blacks but was named in the Junior All Blacks for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup. Despite this setback his excellent form was formally recognised, as he was named as New Zealand's Super 14 Player of the year in the NZRU Awards ceremony on the 13th of December 2007. Highlanders

He plays for the Highlanders in the Super 14

outhland

He also plays for Southland in the National Provincial Championship.

Resigning

On the 18 June 2007, he announced his resigning with the New Zealand Rugby Union until the 2010 season, during which time he will continue to play for Southland and the Highlanders. He highlighted his desire to again pull on an All Black jersey and his passion for rugby in Southland as the main reasons he turned his back on lucrative overseas offers. [ [http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/southlandtimes/4099648a6439.html Sport and Racing - The Southland Times ] ] His decision bucked the trend of the well-documented 'exodus' of New Zealand rugby players to overseas clubs and was hence welcomed on a regional and national level.
