First Day of Summer

First Day of Summer

The First Day of Summer "(sumardagurinn fyrsti)" is a public holiday every spring, on the first Thursday after April 18, in Iceland to celebrate the coming of the summer. Long ago, in Iceland, there were two seasons, winter and spring. Midwinter in the country is usually sunless, and around the time of the First Day of Summer the sun comes back up on the horizon. Ironically, it's sometimes still cold and even snowing when the celebration is held, for Iceland's average summer temperature is only convert|10.6|C|0. On this day there are many parades, shows, and events. Also people exchange gifts with one another, although usually just with children.
