Canute II of Sweden

Canute II of Sweden

Canute II (in Sweden called Knut Långe or sometimes Knut Långe till Sko), "Knut Holmgersson", was king of Sweden from 1229 to 1234. Eric the Saint may have been his great-grandfather (Filip Eriksson, youngest son of the king, is given as Holmger's father in sagas). Canute was closely allied with folkungs who wanted to limit the powers of the church and king. Both of his sons died in the Folkung uprisings against Birger jarl.

Married to Helena, whose parentage and date of death are controversial between researchers (one source alleges her death before 1227, and her having been daughter of jarl Folke Birgersson). [See [http://runeberg.org/sqvinnor/0209.html] ; in Swedish. The source follows old legends and romantic genealogies without modern criticism.]

Canute's sons were:

* Holmger Knutsson (d. 1248)
* Philip Knutsson (d. 1251)
