Walter Panas High School is a public high school serving students in grades 9-12 in Cortlandt Manor, New York, USA. It was opened in 1972, becoming the second high school to serve the Lakeland Central School District. It is a sister school to Lakeland High School of Shrub Oak, New York, USA. Both schools have a combined catchment area of approximately 40 square miles in northern Westchester County. As of Dec 2005, the principal is Susan B Strauss and the assistant principal is Mr. Stewart Hanson who is also Coordinator of Buses. Another assistant principal is Ms. Marlene Gracia and the school has a student population of 900 with 72 teaching faculty. Its school colors are blue and gold and its mascot is the black panther.

History

Walter Panas high school has made many changes through the years. There is a new turf athletic field and a new track. New metal bleachers for spectators have replaced wooden stands.

There has been a rivalry between the two high schools in the district, Lakeland High School and Walter Panas High School. This rivalry has been very important between both schools in epically in the sports aseptic. Both schools have a homecoming football games were the two schools battle it out for pride. Since there is one middle school in the district and two high schools the rivalry between the schools is less than when there was Lakeland Middle School (which is now the new Van Cortlandtville Elementary school).

Clubs

In addition to the clubs found in a typical American high school, students participate in several clubs, including: Amnesty International, Debate Club, [http://www.destinationimagination.org/ Destination Imagination] , Habitat for Humanity, Mock Trial, the Community Service Club, a drama club called Panas Players, and Model UN.

The Panas' Bowling team recently won sectionals, and went to states in Buffalo, NY. It is said, according to one anonymous opponent, that the Panas bowling program is so intense that team members "eat, drink and breathe" bowling. Scott Cestone, a member on the Panas Mens Varsity Bowling Team, made Panas history this year by bowling a 300 game. The Walter Panas Varsity football and baseball team is coached by Anthony Fata.The WPHS football team,as of September 14,2008, is 1-1, losing to Lakeland in their opening game by a score of 49-18(Boooyahh),and defeating Tappan Zee 34-16.

Performance

The school is accredited by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York.The 2007 graduating class of 211 students had an average GPA of 99.71 and SAT score of 1560 (3 areas).
