Hyundai Mobis

Hyundai Mobis

Hyundai Mobis (short for "Mobile" and "System") was established in 1977 as Hyundai Precision & Ind. Co. It is an auto parts company with headquarters based in Seoul, South Korea. In 2000, the company changed its name to Hyundai Mobis. The company forms the 'parts and service' arm for Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors, both of which are Korean brands.

The term

Hyundai Mobis became a term among car enthusiasts for any of Hyundai's and Kia's brands, specifically for car and truck parts. This is due to the Hyundai and Kia names referring to both the parent company and to one of its brands, so to refer explicitly to the parent company, another term was needed.

A similar situation exists for the GM Daewoo Auto & Technology, where "GM Daewoo" could mean either the brand or the parent company. A similar solution was found; enthusiasts refer to GM Daewoo, this is also the name applied to generic GM Daewoo-brand parts. Renault Samsung Motors enthusiasts do not have to deal with such a problem, since the abbreviation RSM has always referred to the parent company.

Car production

In the 1990s, Hyundai Precision was producing the Hyundai Galloper and Hyundai Santamo cars which were licensed from Mitsubishi Motors. In some markets the cars were sold under the Galloper brand name. Production of these cars shifted to the Hyundai Motor Company in 1999.
