Burford, Shropshire

Burford, Shropshire

Burford is a village and civil parish in the South Shropshire district of Shropshire, England.

Location

The parish is situated to the north of the River Teme; on the other side of the Teme is the Worcestershire town of Tenbury Wells. To the west, the A456 road bridges the Ledwyche Brook, leading to the Herefordshire village of Little Hereford. To the northeast is the Shropshire village and parish of Boraston.

Amenities

Burford House Gardens [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/348317] is a popular destination and is located in the southwest of the parish, where the Ledwyche meets the Teme. It is geographically notable for two reasons - it is the most southerly place in Shropshire and is the farthest place from the county town, Shrewsbury, at 45km or 28mi. Also, a small part of the parish of Burford lies on the other side of the Ledwyche and is virtually an exclave.

Even though Burford has never been in Herefordshire or Worcestershire, the fire station is run by the Hereford and Worcester Fire Service and the hospital is run by the South Worcestershire NHS Trust. Equally, the workhouse serving Burford [http://www.tenburyworkhouse.co.uk ] was in Worcestershire.

According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 1,108.

The local Civic Society (The Tenbury and Burford Civic Society - http://www.civicsociety.info) covers Tenbury and Burford, underlining how these settlements form one community, despite being located in different counties.

The parish church is St. Mary's [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/88476] .
