Esther McVey (born 24 October 1960 in Liverpool) is a British law graduate, TV presenter, businesswoman and Conservative prospective Parliamentary candidate.

Biography

McVey was educated in Liverpool at The Belvedere Academy, and under took a law degree at Queen Mary & Westfield University College, London.

Career

McVey has worked in the family business all her life, beginning her working career in the restaurant sector; she is presently a director of the family construction company J.G. McVey and Co Ltd, which specialises in demolition and site clearance.

She returned to the family business after University, while undertaking a post graduation course in radio journalism at City University, London before embarking on a career in the media, both as a presenter and producer. McVey has presented and produced a vast range of programmes, co-hosting GMTV, BBC1's science entertainment series "How Do They Do That," "5's Company", "The Heaven and Earth Show", "Shopping City", BBC2's Youth current affairs programme "Reportage", and Channel4's "Nothing But The Truth" with Ann Widdecombe. It was during this time that she was raped by a senior crew member and has been a passionate campaigner for associated charities ever since.

McVey curtailed her television career, as she focused on developing her own business, although she did take part in Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" at the Liverpool Empire Theatre alongside Jean Bolt and Anita Dobson. Via her company Making It (UK) Ltd, MevEy provides media consultantcy and training, and is the founder of the business network Winning Women. McVey was nominated for both Merseyside Woman of the Year and Cheshire Woman of the Year 2004/5.

Political career

A supporter of Conservative Way Forward, in 2005, McVey stood as a Conservative Party candidate in the UK General Election, in the Wirral West constituency losing to the sitting Labour MP Stephen Hesford by 1097 votes. In January 2008, McVey agreed in an out of court settlement to pay Hesford £6,500 in damages and legal costs after she wrote on her blog that the MP was planning to take part in what was described as a cricket “junket” to Australia and New Zealand. Since 2005, Wirral West has been subject to boundary changes. Therefore it is considered a notional Conservative hold despite having a Labour MP. Personal life

Presently single, McVey lives in West Kirby. As a long standing friend of Kate McCann - they met aged 18 at Northeast Technical College - McVey helped the family set up the Madeleline McCann Fund and remained part of the board for eight months.
