The Baccalaureate School for Global Education (BSGE) is a New York City Public School located in the Astoria section of Queens, New York. BSGE is a relatively new school, estblished in 2002. It serves a student body of approximately 430 students between the 7th and 12th grades. BSGE is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer both the MYP (IB Middle Years Programme) and also the IB Diploma Programme.

The Beginning at Wagner

Founded in 2002, The Baccalaureate School for Global Education was originally housed at Robert F. Wagner Institute for Arts and Technology, a middle/high school in Long Island City.

The New Building

In 2003 the school officially moved to its current address and also added additional classes of seventh graders and ninth graders (Thus having grades 7-10). This tradition was continued each following year until it reached its capacity of six grades in 2006.

The new building is a renovated factory in an industrial neighborhood, the facilities are basic yet comfortable. There is no gym, but there is a "fitness room" and a dance studio. An overall relaxed atmosphere is show through the lack of bells and 75 minute classes, with 5 minutes between classes -- slightly longer than the typical three minutes.

Admissions

All applicants must be residents of Queens County. Every year, BSGE hosts two Open-House evenings. It is important to attend the Open-House, which best coincides with the child’s present needs. If the child will apply for a seat in the high school program, parents should attend the 9th grade Open-House. If the child will apply for a seat in the 7th grade, parents should attend the 7th grade Open-House. No reservations are required.

Notable Faculty/Alumni

Diana Nikkolos, soprano, has received international acclaim for her singing on the opera and concert stages. She has appeared in major roles at the Zurich Opera and sang the role of La Modista in the New York premiere of Nino Rota's The Straw Hat. Ms. Nikkolos has given recitals in Germany, Switzerland and Italy, and in New York City at Carnegie Recital Hall, Abraham Goodman Hall and Alice Tully Hall.Currently serving as an Assistant Prof. of voice, at New York University and artist-in-residence at Baccalaureate School for Global Education, Diana Nikkolos teaches music and is the Director of the BSGE Conservatory of Music in New York.

Traditions

As a budding school, BSGE does have a few traditions and customs.

Culture Night: Just as it sounds, Culture Night is an event where students, families and friends come together in a night of music, food and of course culture.

The Art Auction: Each year students who wish to, showcase their work in BSGE's Art

Earth Day: Presented by Helping Hands is a day long event where students from all grades work together in their annual cleaning of Socrates Sculpture Park located in Astoria, New York.

The Talent Show: Truly BSGE's final bow of the year, the talent show enables all students to showcase their creative sides. From singing, to spoken word, to dancing, the talent show is the stamp of approval on a year well done. Established in 2006, the BSGE Talent Show is a student produced labor of love. It all started as a student's 10th-Grade [http://www.ibo.org/myp/curriculum/project/ MYP Personal Project] .

The Boat Dance: Every year the students of BSGE dress their best for BSGE's annual Boat Dance, which sails the Hudson river in late June. Known as the Prom for the underclassmen, the Boat Dance is yet another time and place where the whole school gets to have fun.

Acceptance "Excerpt from Inside Schools"

"Teachers and parents say the IB diploma gives kids a leg up in college admissions. The colleges are really interested in our transcripts," said a parent. "They know the kids are coming in better prepared for college-level writing, because an IB exam is not a multiple choice exam." Baccalaureate graduated its first class of about 50 students in 2006 and students were admitted to Yale, Mount Holyoke, Colby, Hampshire and Barnard. In 2007, one student was accepted early decision at Brown and another at the University of Chicago."
