Modern adult contemporary

Modern adult contemporary

Modern adult contemporary (or Modern AC) is a popular and influential hybrid radio format. It combines softer alternative rock and upbeat adult contemporary (aka Hot AC) elements.

The Modern AC format has a slightly younger target audience than the standard adult contemporary format. The format is much more upbeat and concentrates heavily on current hits and songs from the past year. There is also a heavier concentration on modern rock hits.

When WLNK in Charlotte, North Carolina switched to this format in 1997, the format targeted 25 to 34 listeners, and featured artists included Hootie & the Blowfish, R.E.M. and Bruce Springsteen but not harder rock such as Pearl Jam or Oasis, or soft pop such as Mariah Carey and Celine Dion [Kay McFadden, "So Long, 'Sunny,' Hello, 'Link,'" "The Charlotte Observer", March 14, 1997.] .
