Sandy Lane (resort)

The Sandy Lane hotel is an upmarket, ultra-five-star luxury hotel and beach-resort situated close to Holetown and Paynes Bay, in Saint James on the island-nation of Barbados. The Sandy Lane Beach Resort was first opened in 1961 on what was formerly a sugar cane plantation estate. In 1997, the original resort was demolished and for three years underwent a $450 million dollar upgrade and renovation. The brand new resort was then reopened in 2000. The resort now includes a newly renovated hotel with a total of 112 guestrooms and suites, a spa, and a world renowned golf course named the "Green Monkey" designed by the well-known golf-course designer Tom Fazio. In 2002, a coral reef attraction was added offshore and is adorned with an actual sunken ship.

As well as being renowned as one of Caribbeans most stylish and family friendly hotels, The Sandy Lane hotel is famous as a haven of the rich and famous. Past guests said to have stayed at the Sandy Lane hotel include Maria Callas, T. S. Eliot, Queen Elizabeth II, Elton John, Jacqueline Kennedy, Aristotle Onassis, Tony Blair, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Winner and Sidney Poitier. The Sandy Lane Beach resort was also the location where the prominent golfing star Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren exchanged their wedding vows on October 5, 2004.

Sandy Lane is owned by two Irish businessmen named John P. McManus and Dermot Desmond. In 2006 it hosted World Golf Championships-World Cup, which was won by Germany.
