Kenneth Lieberthal

Kenneth Lieberthal (born September 9, 1943 Asheville, North Carolina) was Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and Senior Director for Asia at the National Security Council during the Clinton Administration. He is a professor of political science at the University of Michigan, where he is an expert on contemporary Chinese political issues. He is also a Distinguished Professor the of the William Davidson Institute at the Ross School of Business. His research focuses on the evolution of China's political economy, multinational corporate investment in China and India, foreign policy decision-making in China, U.S. foreign policy, and Asian security issues.

Lieberthal teaches the 'Evolution of Communism in China' class each fall semester which is commonly one of the most filled classes at the University. He is affectionately known as "Uncle Kenny" or "K-thal"to his students.

He also teaches the popular "Doing Business with China" [http://www.bus.umich.edu/CourseManagement/ViewCourseDescriptions.asp?Term=W07&Division=STRATEGY&Program=MBA#STRATEGY%20%Doing%20%Business%20%with%20%China] MBA course each year, which generates great interest among business school students who are interested in how multinational corporations can succeed in China. He invites leading experts in the relevant areas, including senior executives of American corporations' China business, as well as China scholars in law, business and social sciences.

He received a B.A. with distinction from Dartmouth College in 1965, an M.A. and East Asian Institute Certificate from Columbia University in 1968, and a PhD in Political Science (Comparative Politics) from Columbia University in 1972.

One of his sons, Keith, is married to Julianna Marguiles and Dr. Lieberthal recently became a grandfather when their first son was born.
