Howard High School, in its 55th year, serves families from Ellicott City, Elkridge, and Columbia, Maryland and is part of the Howard County public school system. The school was formerly known as The Howard County High School. The population is both culturally and economically diverse with over three quarters of the graduates enrolling in post-secondary institutions.

The school is boxed by Maryland Route 108, Maryland Route 104, and immediately southwest of Maryland Route 100 and is visible from the highway.

chedule

Like all other Howard County high schools, Howard High has a yearlong schedule that provides students with the opportunity to earn seven credits. Prior to Fall 2002, Howard High was one of three schools that used a semester schedule (Long Reach and River Hill were the other two). Students attended four ninety-minute classes each day for 90 school days, and then four new classes for the remaining 90 days of the school year. Each semester was broken up into three, 30-day marking periods. The semester schdule is no longer in effect at any of these schools. Currently the school has a schedule which includes 6 fifty minute classes per day , with the fourth period alternating between A day and B day so the students earn a total of 7 credits per year. What time you eat lunch is determined by what class you had for fourth block.

Current events

Currently, Howard High School is under renovation. The 2005–2006 school year opened with a new music/drama wing partially ready for use, a new front entrance, and a temporary cafeteria located in a space that will eventually become the auxiliary gym. In November, 2005, the new administrative wing and main office opened. In December, 2005, the auditorium opened with the winter concert, play and dance performance. During the summer of 2006, the media center moved into the temporary cafeteria and renovation started with an expected completion date of January, 2007. The new cafeteria with a multi-story open atrium and new instructional wing were ready for start of the 2006-2007 school year.
