- Operation Währung
-
During the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, Operation Währung ("Currency" in German) was a special operation conducted as part of Wacht am Rhein.
A small number of German commandos infiltrated Allied lines in American uniforms. These commandos' intention was to take some bridges over the Meuse river for their own advancing, to sabotage and so to disrupt Allied supply operations. All those taken POW, were executed by the US Army. A later problem arose when the US, as a winner in World War II, hanged German military judges after the war because they had done the same with US troops in German uniforms after they found out what was done with their own.
This operation was not successful. See Operation Greif.
