John King (footballer)

John King is an English football player and manager.

He is widely regarded as being the most successful manager in the history of Tranmere Rovers.Fact|date=February 2007 He was appointed manager of the club for a second time (having previously been in charge in the 1970s) towards the end of the 1986-1987 season, with the club fighting not to finish bottom of the fourth division and be relegated from the football league. Safety was only guaranteed in the last game of the season with a 1-0 home win over Exeter City, Tranmere's crucial winner being scored by midfielder Gary Williams. From there he gradually took Tranmere to the verge of promotion to the Premier League, and brought such big name signings as John Aldridge, Pat Nevin and Gary Stevens to Prenton Park. In 1996 - with Rovers struggling for form in the league - chairman Frank Corfe appointed John Aldridge player-manager, and moved King to a consultancy role.

King has also managed Welsh club Caernarfon Town in the 1980s.
