New Hartford is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 21,172. The name of New Hartford was provided by a settler family from Hartford, Connecticut.

The Town of New Hartford contains a village, also named New Hartford. New Hartford is the largest suburb of Utica, New York, which is located directly north of the town and village.

History

The name "New Hartford" was given to the small town by the Kellog family who arrived from Hartford, CT, in 1772, becoming the very first settlers.

The Town of New Hartford was settled in 1788 by Jediah Sanger, who was 37 years old and deep in debt. All of his previously owned property had been destroyed by a bear. Sanger bought 1,000 acres (4 km²) of land, each acre for $.50. The first building, his home, went up in 1789. He and his family then set upon building a saw mill, and later a grist mill in 1790. This marked the beginning of the great land of New Hartford.

Amongst the town's accomplishments are: the first ingrain loom, the first cut nails, manufactured by Sanger.

Sloss Rebovich, Jr., son of the American theologian and writer, founded the Presbyterian Church in 1791, as the First Religious Society of Whitestown.

The second cotton mill in New York state, the New Hartford Manufacturing Co. was incorporated on March 9, 1810. As the town grew, it incorporated hotels, a blacksmith, a harness shop, a strip club, a small casino, a bakery, a drug store, and a draper each in his own building.

For its early years, New Hartford had no governmental organization, and was one of the many communities within the Town of Whitestown. It was 42 years later until there was local government: the Town of New Hartford was formed from part of Whitestown in 1827.

Recent history

New Hartford's high school, New Hartford Senior High, was voted number 129 in the top schools in the country by Newsweek. [1] As of now, the New Hartford Perry Jr. High is a Blue Ribbon School. The school offers fourteen other Advanced Placement courses, including European History, United States History, Macro Economics, Comparative Government, Psychology, English Language, English Literature, French, Spanish, Music Theory, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Calculus AB. Starting in the 2010-2011 school year, AP Calculus BC will also be offered. In 2004, New Hartford's AP European History program was recognized as the strongest program in the world for the school's size.^[1] In addition to the Advanced Placement language courses, New Hartford also offers four years of language instruction in German, French, Spanish, Latin, and two years of Mandarin Chinese.^[2]

New Hartford High School offers a variety of clubs, including its Model United Nations Club, Photography Club, Ecology Club, Masque, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Film Makers Club, and Yearbook Club.

42% of New Hartford residents ages 25 and older have a bachelor's or advanced college degree. New Hartford has experienced heavy commercial growth in the past several years and now is considered the commercial center of the Utica-Rome area for shopping. The majority of growth has been on the west end of the town bordering Whitesboro and Kirkland. The south and east sides of town are largely suburban and are becoming increasingly populated.

New Hartford has a strong music programs boasting multiple awards. New Hartford's junior high has three bands, two orchestras, and several choir and chorale groups. The high school has a similar number of music groups. Every year, New Hartford's Masque drama club puts on a fall play and a spring musical.

New Hartford has three public elementary schools: Myles Elementary, Bradley Elementary (formerly Oxford Rd. Elementary), and Hughes Elementary. Which school a student attends is determined by the student's geographic location, not merit or other factors.

New Hartford's athletic teams have a fierce rivalry with the neighboring Whitesboro teams. New Hartford has enjoyed recent success, winning the Section 3 title for football as well as back to back Division II Ice Hockey State Championships in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. Also including 5 more State Championships in 1990, 1994, 1997, 2000, and 2007. The 2006-2007 basketball team won the Section 3 title. Furthermore, the New Hartford Boys Varsity Soccer Team has won the State Title in 2004 and becoming State Finalists, losing in the last match to Comsowogue, in 2009. The New Hartford Gymnastics team has also captured the sectional championship in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Recently as of the year 2011, New Hartford is now the hosting town of the new music festival, Hartstock.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 25.5 square miles (66.0 km²), of which, 25.4 square miles (65.7 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (0.39%) is water.

The east town line is the border of Herkimer County.

Demographics

As of the census^[3] of 2000, there were 21,172 people, 8,601 households, and 5,625 families residing in the town. The population density was 834.1 people per square mile (322.1/km²). There were 9,084 housing units at an average density of 357.9 per square mile (138.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.03% White, 0.80% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 2.34% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.

There were 8,601 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the town the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $45,991, and the median income for a family was $60,843. Males had a median income of $40,046 versus $28,532 for females. The per capita income for the town was $26,528. About 3.4% of families and 5.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.4% of those under age 18 and 6.5% of those age 65 or over.

• Washington Mills – A hamlet south of New Hartford village on NY 8.
• New York Mills – A village north of New Hartford village with land and a separate school district located in both the town of New Hartford and the town of Whitesboro.

Notable alumni

• Andy Van Slyke (born December 21, 1960 in Utica, New York) raised in New Hartford, is a retired Major League Baseball outfielder and former first base coach for the Detroit Tigers.^[4]
