Greenwich (town), New York

Greenwich is a town in Washington County, New York, United States. It is part of the Glens Falls, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,896 at the 2000 census. Greenwich was also home to several homes that were a part of the famed Underground Railroad.

The Town of Greenwich is located on the west border of the county and has a village named Greenwich.

Geography

The west town line is defined by the Hudson River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 44.4 square miles (114.9 km²), of which, 44.0 square miles (114.0 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (0.9 km²) of it (0.81%) is water. It lies within the Cambridge valley region in between the Adirondack Mountains and Green Mountain Range of Vermont.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,896 people, 1,927 households, and 1,358 families residing in the town. The population density was 111.3 people per square mile (43.0/km²). There were 2,101 housing units at an average density of 47.7/sq mi (18.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.81% White, 0.31% Black or African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.65% of the population.

There were 1,927 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $39,138, and the median income for a family was $47,260. Males had a median income of $34,964 versus $26,629 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,913. About 5.8% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.5% of those under age 18 and 11.7% of those age 65 or over.

Annual Events/Local Artists and Attractions

Whipple City Festival - Held annually in the center of the village, a week-end long event normally held in the middle of June. Truly a local favorite.

Harvest Festival - A fairly new tradition to commemorate the yearly harvest.

Washington County Fair - Just on the outskirts of the Village on the Washington County Fairgrounds, held every year is the Washington County Fair. Residents of Greenwich and neighboring Easton have enjoyed this yearly event for close to a century.

Mary Woodstock, a weekend festival of music, OHV riding, and outdoorsmanship, is held semi-annually just outside of town.
