Benton is a village in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 976 at the 2000 census. The village is located within the Town of Benton.

History

The pioneer priest Father Samuel Mazzuchelli founded the village's Catholic parish, Saint Patrick's Church. Father Mazzuchelli is buried in Saint Patrick's cemetery. He was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II in 1993, and the case for his Sainthood is still pending. [http://www.bentonwi.us/wp/?page_id=2]

Benton is located at coor dms|42|34|15|N|90|23|3|W|city (42.570836, -90.38437)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²).None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 976 people, 393 households, and 260 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,170.2 people per square mile (454.0/km²). There were 417 housing units at an average density of 500.0/sq mi (194.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.36% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 1.23% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, and 0.10% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 393 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 28.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the village the population was spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $30,313, and the median income for a family was $41,518. Males had a median income of $28,882 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,702. About 4.5% of families and 7.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.1% of those under age 18 and 12.8% of those age 65 or over.
