Central Germany

Central Germany

Central Germany (Mitteldeutschland or Zentraldeutschland) has different meanings in different contexts:

  • Central Germany (geography) describes the regions in the geographic center of Germany
  • Central Germany (cultural area) often describes a region within today's states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. This region lies east of the geographic centre but is often called "central Germany" (Mitteldeutschland) as its economic and cultural identity.
