"Jumper" is a 2008 science fiction film from 20th Century Fox and New Regency Productions. It is loosely based on the 1992 science fiction novel of the same name by Steven Gould. Jumping is the same as Jaunting, which was first introduced in the 1956 science fiction novel, "The Stars My Destination" by Alfred Bester. The film is directed by Doug Liman, director of "The Bourne Identity" and "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", and stars Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Rachel Bilson, Jamie Bell, Max Thieriot, AnnaSophia Robb, and Diane Lane. The film follows a person capable of teleporting to any location as he is chased by a secret group intent on killing him.

The script went through a rewrite prior to filming and the roles for the main characters were changed during production. "Jumper" was filmed in 20 cities in 14 countries between 2006 and 2007. The film was released on February 14, 2008 and a soundtrack was released on February 19. The film held the first position in its opening weekend with $27.3 million, despite mostly negative reviews. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes recorded a 16% approval rating and 35/100 on Metacritic. Several novels were developed as tie-ins to the film along with a video game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and Wii consoles, named "". The DVD was released on June 10, 2008, and both Christensen and Liman have spoken of one or more sequels.

Plot

In Ann Arbor, Michigan, 15-year-old David Rice gives his crush, Millie, a snow globe he bought at a yard sale, knowing her dreams of traveling someday. A bully, Mark, throws the globe onto the ice on a river. After he retrieved it, David falls through the ice and is pulled away by the current. He suddenly finds himself in the Ann Arbor Public Library with drenched clothes. He returns home, but later vanishes from his room and is once again in the library. David realizes he can "jump", or teleport, disappearing from one place and instantly appearing in another. Unhappy with his life, he runs away from his life and his father (his mother left when he was five). That night, he returns the snow globe to Millie after leaving his home. He rents a room in New York City and begins to learn how to master his ability. One day, he goes into a bank and under the guise of using the building's bathroom scopes out the location of the bank's vault. He later 'jumps' himself into the bank vault in the middle of the night and steals a large amount of money. The mysterious robbery attracts the attention of Roland Cox (Samuel L. Jackson), a Paladin (a secret society that tracks down and kills Jumpers) who later appears at the bank to investigate while pretending to be with the NSA.

Eight years later, an adult David (Hayden Christensen) has settled into a life of adventure, spending his days jumping around the world, doing various sports, and living lavishly in a penthouse apartment using money stolen from banks. One night, he attends a bar in London and is noticed by another Jumper, Griffin (Jamie Bell) while jumping just before hitting on a woman at the bar. Later that morning he goes to a location to surf, expecting a storm to hit the region. However, there are no waves and he told by another surfer that the storm hit Fiji. David in turn jumps there and has fun surfing 30 foot swells. He also eats a meal while on top of the Sphinx. Elsewhere in a jungle somewhere, Roland Cox kills a jumper and is told on a cellphone call that they "have a lead on the bank". He tells the person on the line that he'll be on the next plane.

When David returns home, he finds Roland in his apartment who confronts him about robbing a banks without opening a door and leaving notes. He also tells David he knows who and what he is. David attempts to jump out the apartment, but is prevented by an electrical weapon Roland uses because it is difficult to jump with a thousand volts of electricity passing through the brain. During their fight, Roland asks David who is protecting him. Eventually, David escapes with a large amount of money and jumps into his old bedroom in his father's house. David's father, William, hears him jump into the room. Because the room is still chain locked, William does not enter the room, but tells a silent David that he can still come home. As William is unlocking the chains, David simply tells him he's not crazy and immediately jumps just before his father enters the room. At David's apartment, Roland contacts someone and tells them that they now have David's "jump sites" and that he wants everybody up and running.

The next morning, David briefly watches his father while at the same time Roland is still in his apartment and finds a photograph of Millie. David goes to Millie's mother's house and finds out where Millie is at. Millie's mother tells him that Millie works at a bar. David later goes to that bar and watches Millie but does not make contact with her. He eventually decides to leave. As he is walking out, he runs into Mark, who recognizes him. At first he denies being David Rice, but is then noticed by Millie. When Mark comes onto Millie, David punches him, instigating a fight. The fight eventually takes the two of them out of view of everyone else and David then instantly jumps them both into the first bank vault he robbed. He leaves Mark there and returns to Millie. They have a conversation in which David lies to Millie, telling her that he is "in banking", but she is skeptical, noting that he failed algebra. During this conversation, Griffin is in the bar watching David. Eventually David invites Millie to a trip to Rome.

The same time David and Millie arrive in Rome, Roland pretends to be an employee of the CIA while visiting the police station where Mark is being held. When a police officer does not believe Roland's cover, Roland knocks him unconscious and interrogates Mark. From Mark he learns about Millie and later apparently finds out that she had just traveled to Rome with David.

In Rome, Millie tells David that she knows that he flunked algebra and is not in banking. She tells him that if he doesn't want to tell her everything that's fine, but just don't lie to her. However, he tells her he's not lying to her. Later, the two of them have sex. Eventually, they go sight-seeing and visit the Colosseum only to find it closed. David uses his abilities to unlock a door from the inside, telling a skeptical Millie the door was already unlocked. While opening another door, he meets Griffin, who warns him that Paladins are coming. Several Paladins show up and attack them. Griffin kills one and teleports, taking the body with him. David tries to leave with Millie, but is detained by Italian police and questioned about the death. While waiting for a magistrate to arrive, David's mother Mary (Diane Lane) appears, gives him the keys to his handcuffs, and tells him he has very little time to leave. David tries to follow her, but she hurries away while he struggles against an Italian policeman. David tells Millie the police let him go and they leave together. Millie, now very suspicious, demands the truth. David declines and puts her on a plane home.

David jumps to Griffin's lair, asking where to find Roland. Griffin explains that Paladins will kill not only the Jumper, but everyone they love. He has been trying to kill Roland for years, as the Paladins killed his parents when he was a child and have tried to kill him several times. David teleports to his father, finds him bleeding and teleports him to a hospital. He returns to Griffin and convinces him to go with him to the airport to greet Millie. Upon arriving, they realize her flight landed an hour ago. Griffin returns to his lair to get weapons while David searches for Millie. He jumps into her apartment, angering Millie, who tells him to leave. David sees Roland arriving and shows her what he can do. He teleports her back to Griffin's lair. An irate Griffin explains the Paladins will follow using a machine to keep the wormhole open. The Paladins arrive to the lair, while hiding, David discovers photos of his mother with death threats written by Griffin, as he moves closer, he gets tied to the ceiling. They fight within Griffin's lair. Griffin attacks the Paladins with a flamethrower and teleports a doubledecker bus to hurl at Roland. Roland is chased back through the portal, but snatches Millie back to her apartment with a cable.

Griffin decides to take a bomb to Millie's apartment and kill everyone. David refuses, wanting to save Millie. They fight through several locations, and David traps Griffin with power lines. Griffin warns that if he faces the Paladins alone he will be outnumbered. He goes anyway and is quickly trapped by Roland's electric cables. David cannot escape as he is tied to the apartment (and as Griffin had explained earlier, a Jumper will be killed if he tries to teleport too much weight). David separates the apartment from the rest of the building and teleports it into a river. He then teleports it to the library where he had first jumped as a teen. He teleports a barely conscious Roland to a cave near the top of the Grand Canyon and abandons him there, saying "I told you I'm different; could've dropped you with the sharks."

David visits his mother and is stunned when a girl, his half-sister, Sophie (Kristen Stewart), answers the door. Mary tells David she has known he was a Jumper since he was five, when Jumpers make their first Jump. She is a Paladin, and she only had two choices at the time: kill David or leave. She allows him to leave, saying she is giving him a "head start." He leaves to meet with Millie outside. He asks her where she wants to go. Millie tells him to surprise her and the couple then teleports to an unknown location.

In November 2005, New Regency Productions hired director Doug Liman to helm the film adaptation of the science fiction novel "Jumper" by Steven Gould. Screenwriter Jim Uhls was hired to rewrite an adapted screenplay by David S. While other films tend to use only one storyboard artist, "Jumper" required six artists who each worked on an individual action sequence. The artists were given specific instruction on the rules of the teleportation used in the film, to ensure accuracy in the storyboarding. One artist reflected on the instructions: "I was just thinking, 'How would a guy that can teleport fight?' Filming

After filming in Rome, scenes were filmed in Toronto during December 2006 to January 2007 and wrapped at the Canadian location on January 19. In February 2007, the next filming site was set up at Gallup Park in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In interviews that followed the release of film (as well as some of the featurettes on the DVD), Jamie Bell was critical of the finished product, stating that he felt it had become "sugar coated" and too many people had worked on it in order to make it a money-spinner. Visual effects

There are shots in the film that use still array footage but not in the same way that we saw in "The Matrix". "The Matrix" was largely about stopping time whereas this was about using slow shutter speeds on those still array cameras to end up with a streaky motion-blurred image as the perspective was changing, which is a pretty interesting look." Critical reception

The film received widespread criticism and poor reviews from critics. Novel tie-ins

Steven Gould, the author of "Jumper" and "Reflex" also wrote "" as a tie-in for the film. The novel, released on August 21, 2007, focuses on the character Griffin which was created by screenwriter David Goyer specifically for the film. Because Griffin had not appeared in the two prior novels, Gould developed "Jumper: Griffin's Story" as a backstory of the character's early childhood before the film. A video game titled "" was made for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and Wii consoles. The storyline focuses on the character Griffin as he attempts to avenge the death of his parents. Prior to the film's release, Hayden Christensen reflected on the possibility of one or more sequels: "This has definitely been set up in a way that will allow for more films, and Doug has been careful to make sure that he's created characters that will have room to grow." Lucas Foster during production of the film stated in an interview: "The ideas got so large, that they really couldn't fit into, you know, one or two movies, they needed to evolve over at least three movies. So we planned the story out over three movies and then we sliced it up in such a way as to leave room for the other two movies." In response to the film's box office performance, Doug Liman has spoken of his ideas for a sequel. Jumper: David's Story

A movie is being made called "" based on David's childhood when he discovers his ability, and running away from home. It is in production and is to be released on October 31, 2009. The movie is going to begin filming October 28. A script is being made but it is not finished yet.when It takes place during David's school years but he doesn't meet Millie yet. Max Thieriot is not going to star as David neither Michael Rooker as his alcoholic father William Rice but a whole new cast. It has nothing to do with Jumper 2. It's been stated in a magazineClarifyme|date=October 2008 that the director is focusing a lot on the teleportation ability meaning that the effect of teleporting will be mixed with fighting like Griffin did but more intense. The director said "There is going to be sic|alot of fighting involving teleporting, remember that this is when David discovers his power so he will be training. David will also steal things so David gets the nickname of "thief" by the police but the police is unaware of his power and of his iedentity". The second important role is David's grandmother Ann Rice (father of William). She is aware of her son's alcohol habit. The third important role is Griffin, an orphan.
