António Augusto Silva Veloso (born January 31, 1957 in São João da Madeira) is a retired Portuguese footballer who played in various defensive positions, most notably with SL Benfica. He was also a Portugal international, and is the father of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso.

Club career

Veloso starting playing football with hometown AD Sanjoanense, then moving to SC Beira-Mar and joining SL Benfica in 1980-81.

He won the Portuguese league in 1981, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1994, and the Portuguese Cup in 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1993. Veloso also played at the UEFA Cup finals in 1983, as Benfica lost to RSC Anderlecht 1-2 on aggregate and, most notably, in the 1988 European Champions Cup final, where he missed the penalty shot that gave PSV Eindhoven the final win (5-6). An injury left him out of the team that surprinsingly reached the 1990 final, lost to AC Milan 0-1. Veloso retired at 38, after 15 seasons with Benfica.

International career

Veloso had 40 caps for Portugal, making his debut in a 2-1 win over Scotland, on November 18, 1981, in a 1982 World Cup qualifier. He played at Euro 1984, where Portugal reached the semi-finals, and was left outside the 1986 World Cup team, due to a doping test that was later proved to be fake.

His last game was a 2-2 draw with Spain on January 19, 1994, in a friendly match, aged 37.
