Little Italy Festival

Little Italy Festival is an annual festival that takes place on Labor Day Weekend in Clinton, Indiana. The festival is run by the L.I.F.T. (Little Italy Festival Town) board, and the City of Clinton. Each year a Little Italy Festival Queen of Grapes is crowned, as well as Re (King) & Regina (Queen).

On July 19th, 2008 Sherry Link, 17, of Clinton IN was named the Queen of Grapes for the 2008 Labor Day Weekend Celebration. The first runner up was Kellie Clem of Clinton IN.

History

Clinton's tourism efforts, previously dormant, began to blossom early in 1966, starting with a modest Lions Club project which caught the fancy of the public and mushroomed into the city's first Little Italy Festival in less than six months.

It was in February that a proposal was made at a Lions meeting to build an attractive planter at Elm and Water Streets which would replace the dead-end high-way barrier erected when a new bridge across the Wabash River was completed some 100 yards to the south. A first project estimate was set at approximately $300 and a committee named to investigate the possibilities.

At about the same time, the Clinton Chamber of Commerce was asked to submit a representative photographer use on an area television station. The picture was supposed to identify the city in some way so the viewer would recognize the community at a glance. It so happened that The Daily Clintonian photographer approached at the meeting was also a member of the Lions Club project committee, and this led to several newspaper articles citing Clinton's lack of an identity and mentioning a possible tie-in with the proposed Lions river front project. Readers responded with a variety of suggestions.

Several of the ideas presented dealt with the city's coal mining background, others reminded of the well known Italian restaurants. Oddly many of the ideas had been brought out at intervals over a period of years, but failed to materialize into something concrete.

Spurred on by letters and phone calls, the Lions committee began to assemble pertinent suggestions into the beginning of a tourism program, weaving in the good ideas, weeding out the superfluous, and adding new proposals of their own.

The Italian theme seemed a natural since at one time the city had a thriving settlement of immigrants from Italy in the northwest part of town. This section has been called "Little Italy" for years during its earlier history, and was still widely hailed as "spaghetti town."

On March 17,1966, a tentative Little Italy Festival was outlined in a newspaper article, and the response was terrific.

At a subsequent meeting of the Clinton Lions Club, the members were given an opportunity to continue the original planter idea or to abandon that proposal in favor of a community-wide tourist promotion. They unanimously agreed on the latter and set about to spearhead the new project.

Other local organizations were invited to participate and, at the first public meeting on April 19, representatives of 30 area organizations were present. Ernie Gillio, Lions president at the time, and William Wake, project chairman, acted as co-chairmen of the meeting.

Sketches of suggested fountains, planters, speaker-band platforms, and general Old World scenic settings were shown and discussed and some idea of what was wanted was formed.

The name "Project LIFT" was enthusiastically endorsed when Mr. Wake pointed out that the first letters of Little Italy Festival Town spell the word LIFT, and expressed the hope that it would indeed provide a "lift" for the community.

Finding it advisable to incorporate, attorney Joe Beadsley prepared the papers and, at a public meeting nine directors were named. The directors then selected officers and drew lots for the length of term each was to serve. They were eligible for re-election.

Mr. Wake was chosen as the first president of LIFT, Inc, (one year term); Ernie Gillio, first vice-president (one year); Bob Welker, second vice-president (three years); Claire Ferando, recording secretary (one year); Evelyn Iacoli, corresponding secretary (two years); Ruby Gallagher,treasurer (three years);Roy Divan, three years; Ray Ave and Mr. Beadsley, each two year terms.

At a general stockholders meeting early that year, Mrs. Ferando, Mr. Gillio and Mr. Wake were re-elected for new terms of three years. A new office of executive-secretary was created for Mr. Wake and Gillio was named president of the board.

Clinton's Little Italy Festival had a very young beginning, but it was a good, wholesome one with very sincere intents. LIFT's festival has become one of the foremost events in the mid-western United States, and annual crowds of between 60,000 and 80,000 have flooded the city each year.

Since LIFT's beginning many more persons, businesses and civic organizations have taken active parts to make the festival what it is today; and it still has most of the originators and former board members working as hard as ever.

Features

Admission to the Little Italy Festival is free including the Midway. Other attractions do cost money, such as the food, games/rides, Wagon Ride Tour, and the consumer stands.

The Little Italy Festival officially kicks-off at 6 P.M. the Friday before Labor Day, with the Little Italy Festival Parade and runs until Labor Day.
