The Winnipeg Grenadiers

The Winnipeg Grenadiers was an infantry regiment of the Canadian Army formed in 1908. In 1965 it was placed on the Supplementary Order of Battle.

The regiment is perpetuated by a Royal Canadian Army Cadets unit of the same name which parades at Minto Armoury in Winnipeg, Canada.

Combat deployments

First World War

The 78th Battalion (Winnipeg Grenadiers), CEF served in France and Belgium from 13th August 1916 to 4th May 1919. It was part of the 12th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division.

While in the field it took part in the following battles:

Second World War

During the Second World War two battalions were mobilized for combat operations. The 1st Battalion, The Winnipeg Grenadiers, mobilized on 1st September 1939 as part of the 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. In the spring of 1940, the battalion was sent to the British West Indies (Bermuda and Jamaica) as garrison troops tasked with guarding Axis prisoners of war and inspecting cargo and passenger ships. This task was completed in September 1941 with the battalion returning to Winnipeg in September 1941.

The battalion in mid October was assigned overseas duty and left Winnipeg on the 25th October 1941 and arrived in Hong Kong on the 16th November 1941.

Battle of Hong Kong - South-East Asia, 1941

A reconstituted 1st Battalion was formed in January 1942 and posted to British Columbia for coastal defence. In 1943 this battalion took part in the invasion of Kiska in the Aleutian Islands to expel Japanese troops.

His Majesty King George V awarded the following battle honours on 15th September 1929. The ten honours, marked by an asterisk (*), were approved for emblazonment on the 78th Battalion's Regimental Colours.

"'11th Canadian Reserve Battalion, Winnipeg GrenadiersCanadian Expeditionary Force"'

Because it was a reserve battalion located in Great Britain as part of the training cadre, then one can assume that the only battle honour awarded would be

"The Great War, 1916-17".

"'100th Canadian Infantry Battalion, Winnipeg GrenadiersCanadian Expeditionary Force"'

This battalion was absorbed by the 11th Canadian Reserve Battalion in 1917. In September 1929, the battle honour, "The Great War, 1916-17" was awarded for emblazonment on the battalion's regimental colour.

10th Machine Gun Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps

The 10th Machine Gun Battalion was amalgamated with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in 1936 to form the Winnipeg Grenadiers (Machine Gun) Regiment. The battle honours awarded the 10th Machine Gun Battalion became the battle honours of the Winnipeg Grenadiers.
