Falabella

Falabella is a department store retailer founded by Salvatore Falabella in Santiago, Chile. In its original form, it was a tailor shop but today has become one of the largest retailers in Latin America. Falabella department stores can be found in Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. Falabella Department stores sell a wide variety of merchandise including apparel, home furnishings, electronics and sporting goods. Falabella is a multi-channel retailer selling by web, phone, catalog, and television.

In addition to the department stores, S.A.C.I. Falabella, the holding company also owns and operates Sodimac Homecenter home improvement stores in Chile, Colombia and Peru. Other substantial business units include the CMR credit card, Hipermercados Tottus (Chile and Peru), Supermercados San Francisco (Chile), Viajes Falabella, Falabella Pro, Banco Falabella and FalabellaTV (Chile and Peru).

On May 17 2007, Falabella signed a merger agreement with D&S company that would convert the company into the second largest retailer in Latin America. But in 2008, the Chilean Superintendence of Values and Insurance ("Superintendencia de Valores y Seguros" in Spanish) rejected the merger due to presumed monopoly.
