Jake Dean was a fictional character in the long-running British Channel 4 television soap opera "Hollyoaks".

He was played by actor Kevin Sacre.

Character's background

Jake, eldest of the Dean siblings, became the local landscape gardener for the local council Parks and Leisure Department when he arrived in Hollyoaks. It wasn’t too long before he received some female attraction as he began to date Jodie Nash, but the relationship was short lived. Family problems soon occurred and it was up to Jake on several occasions to bail his family out. Frankie and Johnno both ran into huge debts which left the Deans having to move out of their home and it was left up to Jake to carry out a mortgage on his own name. However, it was not to be the end of their problems as Johnno left the family after having an affair and impregnating his mistress. Jake had to do some fast growing up as he tried to keep his family together.

Relationship with Becca

Following Ben Davies's wedding to Izzy Cornwell, Jake shared a kiss with Becca Hayton who he had been trying to impress all night. Jake pursued Becca and was delighted when she became his girlfriend. The pair’s relationship seemed ideal and everything just seemed to go from strength to strength. However, tragedy was just round the corner when Jake’s best friend Dan Hunter died during a rally car race, which Jake helped him to prepare. Jake left comforting Dan’s younger sister Lisa for her loss but soon he began an affair with Lisa behind Becca’s back, as Jake tried fend Lisa off but always ended up in bed with her. He ended the affair and planned to propose to Becca. This went wrong, the guilt of having cheated on the woman he loved got too much, and rather than proposing, he confessed to the affair. Becca was heartbroken and Jake begged her to forgive him but after discovering he had not only cheated on her but had also given her an STD she broke up with him. For months Jake kept his head down and tried his best to win Becca back. Slowly, Jake managed to persuade Becca to give him another chance as the pair rekindled their relationship. Jake began to gain Becca’s trust and soon after Jake proposed to Becca in style as he was dressed a knight on a horse. Although the proposal went slightly wrong, Jake was over the moon when Becca accepted and the two were reconciled. They married in a double wedding as Jake’s mum Frankie also got married to Jack Osborne. Becca had doubts on the wedding day and seriously thought of calling the whole thing off, but married him anyway after talking to her father.

However, married life proved to be having its fair ups and down for Jake. Becca’s younger sister Nancy moved in with the newlyweds and Jake also wanted to try for a baby, something Becca wasn’t keen on. For months Jake had felt that something in his relationship with Becca wasn’t right and put it down to Becca losing her father. Shortly after that Becca told him she was pregnant with his baby, Jake discovered that Becca was having an affair with sixteen-year-old Justin Burton, a former student of hers. Becca confessed the affair to Jake, which made him furious. Becca also revealed that she didn't know who was the father of her baby. He attacked Becca at first (even though she was pregnant) and then removed his wedding ring. He then rushed in on the Burtons' party and where he beat up Justin heavily. Jake was arrested by the police and turned into ‘No more Mr Nice Guy’.

After moving out from his and Becca’s flat, Jake moved into The Dog. Slowly, Jake tried to rebuild his life but got himself involved in another accident as he accidentally knocked down Diane Valentine whilst he was upset after a row with his family. However, rather than stick around, Jake drove off, making it a hit and run. He turned himself in to the police a few days later, where he was charged with four offences, resulting in the possibility of a fourteen-year sentence. However, in the end he was put on a two-year probation, a decision that further drove a wedge between the Deans and the Valentines, though Calvin had saved Jake from the fire that burned down The Dog.

Meanwhile Becca and Justin's relationship broke down and Justin filed a false report to the police that Becca had had sex with him whilst he was 15 years old. Jake kidnapped Justin (as he didn't want his child to be brought up in prison) and Justin managed to get free and testify anyway. Becca was found guilty and was sent to prison where she gave birth to a baby boy called Charlie and she decided to let Charlie spend its first year with Jake, the alleged father, rather than live in prison. After a week, Jake and Justin had a confrontation as to who was Charlie's father, so Steph persuaded Jake to take a paternity test. When the results came in, Jake did not open the letter containing the results. He went home and told his family he was Charlie's dad but when he was alone in his room, he ripped up the unopened results envelope. Becca was later stabbed to death in prison.

Beginning a relationship with Nancy

Jake and Nancy nearly shared a kiss, forcing him to show his feelings about Nancy to Craig, who did not know that the girl Jake is fond of is his friend. Later Craig told Nancy Jake was in a relationship. This brought out her temper onto Jake who confessed it was her and that Craig had twisted the truth. They then shared a kiss and in the next episode it is made obvious that they slept together.

After their night of passion, Nancy believes it has been a one night stand after waking up to find Jake gone. She calmly brushes it off and decides not to bring it up unless Jake does. She is later confronted, however, by Jake who said he wished this to be 'the start of something, not the end.' They then kissed again and it shows that their relationship has started. But in a further scene at the Dog whilst walking with Charlie, Nancy 'trips' and is caught by Jake. He suspects she did it on purpose to 'cop a feel'. They giggle and he starts to move in for a kiss and cuddle when they are reminded that they are in the public. Nancy says it is now her time to 'freak out' and she is 'not ready' for people to be aware of them. However it doesn't stop them from doing what they want, back at the flat.

But soon Jake and Nancy found out that Becca's name had been cleared, making Nancy feel that their relationship was 'wrong', telling Jake their relationship was over. However at Steph's graduation party Jake realized he needed to prove himself to Nancy if he was ever going to win her back. So when he was saying a few words for Steph he declared his feelings for Nancy in front of all his friends and family to which Nancy replied by saying thank-you and kissing him. Frankie, Jake's mum, was not pleased, however, and wanted Jake to end it or tell her it was some sick joke but he and Nancy refused and pursued their relationship despite the opposition of many people.

The couple were accepted by more people after Jake and Nancy's dinner party with Tony, Carmel, Darren and Zoe as well as Nancy's friends. The couple was not discovered by Mrs Hayton, Nancy's mother, until she came round to see Nancy on the day of her A Level results, and she is displeased by the couple's relationship.

When Sarah revealed to Frankie that she & Craig were engaged, Nancy said that they'd kept it a secret after the shock of her relationship with Jake, and Frankie was still clearly being judgmental about it. At the engagement party Jake shared a kiss with Nancy and Frankie stated that there's a time and a place. This annoyed Jake, who became angry with his mother and told her that she'd practically disowned him. Frankie became distressed by this and finally decided to try and accept their relationship.

Problems with Craig

Of all the Dean family, Jake was the least supportive when he discovered the truth about Craig's sexuality. Jake refused to accept that Craig was gay, saying it was "disgusting" and "abnormal". Although when Craig left for Dublin with John Paul, he turned up at the airport and told Craig even though he didn't understand it, they're still brothers and he'll always support him. However, Jake enjoyed taunting John Paul after having spoken to Craig on the phone, saying that Craig was having a great time, going out with loads of girls and that the 'thing' he had with John-Paul seemed to be just a phase.

Attack on Simon

When Jake heard Gilly Roach's accusations that lifeguard Simon Crosby was a paedophile, he was disgusted. Simon entered the Dog in the Pond and Jake began hurling abuse at him, in spite of Jack's reminder that they had no proof of Simon's guilt. When Simon left, Jake and Gilly followed him and began taunting him. Soon a large crowd gathered outside Simon's home, screaming and throwing bricks and bottles at the doors and windows. Max, O.B., and Simon's ex-wife Gemma tried to proclaim Simon's innocence, leading to a fight between Max and Jake. When the police showed up, the mob ran away. Meanwhile, a shattered Simon had attempted suicide.

Controlling Nancy

Jake had always had a dark side, but as he continued to struggle to find work and Nancy repeatedly put him down while spending time with her university mates, he slipped into a downward spiral. He stole Nancy's keys and locked her out of the flat, causing her to miss classes. She blamed herself and he told her this was a good example why she should not go out with her friends. When he wanted to have a naming ceremony for Charlie, she said she didn't like the idea. She also continued to give tutorials to his teenage foster brother, Newt, in spite of his objections. Soon, Jake dumped her, taking Charlie with him. Not satisfied to leave her on her own, he sneaked into the flat and broke the pipes, causing the place to be flooded. Nancy could not repair the plumbing and called him. Feeling helpless on her own, she reconciled with Jake, agreeing to wear conservative clothes and stop dyeing her hair. At Charlie's naming ceremony, Jake proposed to her, using none other than Becca's engagement ring. Nancy accepted.

On New Years Eve, Nancy got drunk in the pub and 'lost' her engagement ring outside The Dog near the pond. Jake asked her about it earlier and she claimed it was by the sink at the flat. Jake found the engagement ring by the Pond and, knowing Nancy had lied to him, put it by the sink. When Nancy found the engagement ring by the sink, she was speechless but Jake continued to manipulate her.

He went to see how Nancy was getting on with Newt, only to find her top in a revealing position and half off her shoulder, revealing her tattoo. He was horrified and tried to get Nancy to go downstairs and have a drink with him and Russ, but she stood up to him. He ran back to the flat, flipped out and then phoned the police, claiming Nancy had been having an affair with a student. Nancy later got arrested and Jake blamed her.

Charlie's Cancer and Paternity Issues

On 22nd January 2008, Charlie was revealed to have an acute form of leukimia, Distraught at the news, Nancy and Jake pleaded with doctors to run tests to see if either of them were eligible to donate their bone marrow to Charlie. Later on doctors confirmed that he could not donate bone marrow as he was not Charlie's biological father, confirming that Justin Burton (who had an affair with Becca) was in fact Charlie's dad. Devastated and shocked by the news of Charlie's paternity, when Nancy and Jake hugged, hoping Charlie will wake up, Nancy looked at Jake in horror and pushed away from him, probably assuming he had lied about the paternity. But Jake confessed that when he took the DNA test last year, he threw the results away and didn't bother to look in the envelope, he did this because whatever the results show he wanted other to think he was Charlie's father and hope it would be true.

Marrying Nancy

Brushing aside objections from Nancy and his family that the wedding should be postponed until Charlie recovers, Jake arranges a ceremony in the hospital chapel for 14th February, the anniversary of Becca's death. After asking Russ to be his best man, he has a fit of rage and throws him out of the flat for questioning the timing of the wedding.

On the day, Jake ignores the strained atmosphere and Nancy's subdued and unenthusiastic behaviour, trying to act as though everything is normal. After the reception, back at the flat, he tries to force Nancy to make love despite her repeated refusal. It seems that only Steph's unexpected arrival prevents him from raping her.

In the morning Jake is angry with Nancy and bitterly compares her with Becca. He denies attempting to rape her, and turns to pitiful begging (still with an undercurrent of violence) when she says she is leaving.

She leaves anyway, leaving him alone, but when she gets to the hospital she realises Jake has lost her visitation rights, even though Jake is not related to Charlie. She goes back to Jake and says she will phone the police, but he laughs it off.

Custody Battle

Desperately, Nancy runs to Justin and asks him to help her get custody of Charlie. Justin tells her to deal with it herself.

On the 27th February 2008 Jake received a letter from Nancy's solicitor outlining her fight for custody of Charlie. Jake says that fathers never get a fair trial when it comes to custody battles, clearly nervous. He later verbally attacks Nancy in the street, telling her she will never get custody now she has gone back to her old image, he however later backs down when Frankie and Jack show up making himself appear to be the victim, claiming he is a good dad to Charlie, Justin overheard everything Jake said to Nancy. Later that night, he visits Nancy and tells her that he will join her custody battle. Jake, however, does not yet know that Justin is helping Nancy.

On 14 March 2008, Jake attempted suicide by gassing him and Charlie in a car. When Nancy went to save Charlie from his clutches, she leaves Jake for dead. At home, Nancy called the ambulance for Charlie, but was interrupted by Jake, trying to take Charlie away from her. He pushes her onto a coffee table until Nancy defended herself by hitting him with a black object, saying "Charlie's not your son." When Justin comes to her rescue, he spots Jake lying unconscious on the floor. But when the paramedics turns up, Jake had already disappeared without Charlie.

On the 18th March, Jake returns and manipulates Frankie into giving him enough money to run away to France. He planned to take Charlie with him and put him in hospital when they were in France. However, the police arrived as Jake was about to leave and arrested him. Jake was sectioned and detained in a mental hospital. If his mental state recovers, he is likely to stand trial for the attempted rape of Nancy as well as unlawfully imprisoning and assaulting her, and possibly the attempted murder and/or grievous bodily harm of Charlie during the suicide attempt.

Darren and Warren Fox came up with an idea to have Jake confess to the murder of Sean Kennedy, thus freeing Sean's wife and Warren's fiance, Louise Summers. Once Warren promised to give Jack money and Justin agreed to stay away from Charlie and help Frankie get custody of Charlie, Jake agreed.
