The Hungarian Wikipedia ("Wikipédia") is the Hungarian version of Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Started on July 8, 2003, this version reached the 100,000 article milestone on July 17, 2008.

History

The first Wikipedia related to the Hungarian language was created on September 5, 2001 by Larry Sanger, the English language Wikipedia coordinator at the time. He created the address at http://hu.wikipedia.com/. At that time Wikipedia was still running on UseModWiki. For many months there was little Hungarian content, and there were problems with vandalism.

The Hungarian Wikipedia as it is known today was launched on July 8, 2003. On this day, the [http://hu.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kezd%C5%91lap&oldid=18 opening page] was made available with a Hungarian interface and in Hungarian, at its current address of http://hu.wikipedia.org/.

Results

With almost a hundred active editors, the Hungarian Wikipedia contains tens of thousands of articles and has moved up from 34th place in 2003 to 22nd place in the , its best ranking being #18 in December 2005 and January 2006. According to statistics [ [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias List of Wikipedias] , Meta-Wiki, January 1, 2008] , on January 1, 2008, the Hungarian Wikipedia contained 81,605 articles and 27,570 images with 2,646,658 edits by 23 administrators, 36,044 registered users as well as many unregistered ones. Hungarian Wikipedia reached the 50,000 article milestone on February 7, 2007 and the 100,000th on July 17, 2008.
