It was written and produced by Jermaine Dupri and Tamara Savage for her second studio album "The Boy is Mine" (1998), incorporating elements of Diana Ross' 1976 recording "Love Hangover," penned by Marilyn McLeod and Pam Sawyer. Its lyrics chronicle a woman's attempt to inform a potential lover that, although she would like to, she does not "get down on the first night."

The song was released as the album's second single, following a major worldwide success with "The Boy Is Mine." It became Monica's second number-one hit on the U.S. "Bilboard" Hot 100, where it remained five non-consecutive weeks atop the chart. Outside the States, "The First Night" reached the top 10 in Canada and the United kingdom.

"The First Night" was ranked #18 on Top Hot 100 Hits of 1998.
