The Citroën Berlingo is a panel van and leisure activity vehicle produced by the French manufacturer Citroën since 1996. It was based on the Citroën ZX/Peugeot 306 estate floorpan and mechanicals. With its rectangular, box like cargo space and its aerodynamic front, it can conceptually be considered the descendant of the 2CV AK400 (the van version of the 2CV).

The Berlingo uses the same chassis and looks very similar to its PSA Group stablemate the Partner. It was launched in 1996, and a revised version featuring a redesigned interior and front end was released in November 2002 (Berlingo I Phase 2). The passenger car version is named Multispace, and is marketed in several European countries. For the MERCOSUR, still made in Argentina the Berlingo I.

Berlingo concept cars

When the Berlingo was first shown at the Mondial de l'Automobile in 1996, a set of three concept cars was also presented:

  • Berlingo Coupé de Plage
  • Berlingo Berline Bulle
  • Berlingo Grand Large

The Berline Bulle concept was roomy small car that could be considered as a precursor for the C3. Only one of these concepts was actually developed, the Grand Large version, which was developed into the present Multispace.

Two different models replaced the first generation of the Berlingo in 2008.

One, known as Nemo,[4] has been developed in cooperation with Fiat and Tofaş. Based on the Fiat Grande Punto platform, it will be built in Turkey and is also marketed as Peugeot Bipper and Fiat Fiorino. The Peugeot and Citroën will be almost identical; the Fiorino will also have a different, Fiat made, diesel engine. It will be cheaper and smaller than the present Berlingo.

The Berlingo II is based on PSA's Platform 2 (like the Citroën C4) and therefore is slightly larger, and considerably more expensive than its predecessor. The engine range is expected to be similar to other current models of the PSA group. It has been officially unveiled in January 2008.
