Jordanhill College

Jordanhill Campus, in Jordanhill, Glasgow, Scotland, is now home to the Faculty of Education of the University of Strathclyde. Within the faculty, departments include Childhood and Primary Studies, Creative and Aesthetic Studies, Curricular Studies, Educational and Professional Studies, and Sport, Culture and the Arts.

The Faculty also is the home to the Glasgow School of Social Work, a joint department with the University of Glasgow.

Professor Jill Bourne is Dean of Education, with vice deans Brian Green, Dr P Dougall and Professor Effie Maclellan.

History

The site began as a teacher training college for Glasgow, the successor to Church of Scotland and Free Church teacher training colleges in the area. It trained both male and female candidates for the teaching profession, with students typically going on to teaching jobs in Scotland. As well as generalist teaching, Jordanhill College was also the location of the Scottish School of Physical Education, the centre for the training of male specialist physical education teachers in Scotland from 1931 to 1987.

In 1988, Rev. Finlay Macdonald was elevated to governor of Jordanhill College of Education. In that same year, the demonstration school attached to the teacher training college, known as Jordanhill College School, separated from the College to form Jordanhill School. At Jordanhill College, Macdonald chaired the PTA Action Committee, which campaigned successfully for the school's survival as a local primary and secondary within the public sector. In 1993 the college itself merged with the University of Strathclyde with the Jordanhill campus subsequently serving as home of the Education Faculty. The Faculty of Education will relocate in 2011 from its current suburban site to a purpose built, state of the art city centre building, right on the edge of the trendy Merchant City, adjacent to the University of Strathclyde's main campus in Glasgow's city centre. The University has already tabled plans to sell the Jordanhill site for the construction of new eco-friendly homes close to the popular Jordanhill School.
